Wisdom Tooth Extraction

For many people, wisdom tooth extraction is a necessary and inevitable part of life. This common oral procedure is usually done to relieve pain or prevent problems that can occur when wisdom teeth come in. It can be a stressful experience, but understanding the process and being familiar with what to expect before, during and after the procedure can help reduce your anxiety.

ABOUT WISDOM TEETH

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars in the back of the mouth. They are called wisdom teeth because they usually come in during the teenage years, a time when people are considered to be wiser than they were as children. While some people have no problems with their wisdom teeth and they come in without any issues, others may have wisdom teeth that come in crooked, or that become impacted, meaning they get stuck in the jaw and don’t come in all the way. When this happens, wisdom teeth may need to be extracted.

It is estimated that around 60-65% of the population will develop at least one form of impacted wisdom teeth during their lifetime  which is why some people need to have them extracted. The main reason why these teeth become impacted is due to the fact that there is simply not enough space in the mouth for them to erupt properly. When this happens, the wisdom teeth can become positioned horizontally, diagonally, or even backwards and this can cause a lot of problems.

Emergency Tooth Extraction

If you’ve recently been told that you need to have a  tooth extracted, it can be an intimidating experience. Fortunately, having your teeth removed is a relatively common and straightforward procedure - and understanding the facts surrounding the extraction process can help make the experience less daunting.

When having your wisdom teeth removed, it is important to be aware of the recovery process. For the first day or two after surgery, it is normal to experience some swelling and discomfort. Your doctor will prescribe pain medication to help you through this. It is important to take it easy and get plenty of rest.
